Shelly Wall Display firmware 2.8 adds Matter controller support
Shelly has released Wall Display firmware 2.8.0 on its stable channel, bringing Matter support to its newer wall panels. As a Matter controller, a Wall Display can add Matter devices from other brands using their setup code and show them as tiles next to Shelly devices, including lights, covers, thermostats, air conditioners, fans, robot vacuums and sensors. Devices added this way can be shared with other Wall Displays in the home and, with a temporary pairing code, also added to Apple Home, Google Home or SmartThings.
The panel can also join Apple Home and other Matter systems as an accessory. Its relay outputs appear as switches, a dimmer power supply as a dimmable light, its built-in presence sensor as an occupancy sensor, the room thermostat as a thermostat and a paired Shelly BLU H&T as temperature and humidity sensors. Both roles are limited to the Wall Display XL, X2i, X1i, U1 and D1; the first-generation Wall Display and the X2 can only use Matter devices shared from a newer panel. Shelly notes that Matter certification for the X2i, X1i and D1 is still in progress, so ecosystems show a warning when these models are added. Thread devices are not supported natively and still need their own hub.
The firmware is delivered over the air to existing panels. Control of these Matter devices from the Shelly app is announced for Shelly Premium subscribers, but no date has been given. Shelly does not mention any regional restrictions for the update.
