Best HomeKit & Matter Smart Locks for Europe (2026)

Nuki, Aqara, SwitchBot or Yale? We compare the HomeKit and Matter smart locks that fit European doors and work with Apple Home, from retrofit locks that keep your existing cylinder to keypad and face-unlock bundles, and explain honestly which ones need a Thread border router, a bridge or a home hub.

A smart lock is the one smart home device where "mostly works" isn't good enough. It has to fit your door, keep working when the Wi-Fi drops, and never leave you standing outside. In Europe there's an extra twist: many of the big-name smart locks you read about are American deadbolts that simply don't fit a European door with a euro profile cylinder. This guide only covers locks built for European doors, and it's honest about what each one needs to show up in the Apple Home app.

How we chose

We started from every lock in our catalog that is sold in European Amazon stores and works with Apple Home, either natively through HomeKit or through Matter. Then we narrowed it down:

  • Fits European doors. Retrofit locks that mount on the inside of the door over a euro profile cylinder, so the outside of your door and your keys stay as they are. No US deadbolts.
  • Genuinely works with Apple Home. Native HomeKit or Matter, controlled from the Home app and Siri. No Homebridge or workarounds.
  • Honest about hubs. Every lock here needs some extra hardware for remote access, whether that's a HomePod, an Apple TV or a manufacturer bridge. We say exactly what for each pick.
  • A real fallback. Your normal key keeps working from outside, so a flat battery is an inconvenience, not a locksmith call.
  • Availability. Locks you can buy in several EU countries, so the same advice works in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain.

Prices change too often to be useful in an article, so we leave those to the product boxes, which show a current price where one is available.

Our top pick: Nuki Smart Lock Pro (5th generation)

Nuki, from Graz in Austria, has been making retrofit smart locks for European doors for a decade, and the fifth-generation Smart Lock Pro is its best lock that doesn't need a new cylinder. It mounts on the inside of the door over your existing euro cylinder, with your key left in the lock, and turns it with a new brushless motor that Nuki says is about three times faster than earlier generations. You can choose between three speed modes, including a quieter "Gentle" mode for early mornings.

For Apple Home, the Pro uses Matter over Thread. That means no Nuki Bridge, but you do need a Thread border router and home hub: a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation or later) or an Apple TV 4K with Thread. Once it's added, the lock appears in the Home app and works with Siri and automations. It also has built-in Wi-Fi for the Nuki app, remote access is included without an extra purchase, and it runs on a rechargeable battery that you charge on the door with a magnetic cable.

It's the lock we'd fit on our own front door: fast, quiet when you want it to be, and from a company that knows European locks inside out.

Best value Thread lock: Aqara Smart Lock U200 Lite

Aqara
Aqara Smart Lock U200 Lite
HomeKit Matter Bluetooth Door lock

The U200 Lite is the simplest way to get a Thread smart lock on a European door. Like the Nuki, it fits over your existing cylinder on the inside, and Aqara says it supports euro profile, UK oval and some Scandinavian cylinders. It connects over Matter over Thread and Bluetooth, has a rechargeable battery that Aqara rates at up to six months, and adds auto-lock, a quiet mode and NFC sticker unlocking.

As with every Thread lock, Apple Home needs a Thread border router and home hub such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K. In return you get a lock that's in the Home app with no Aqara hub and no Wi-Fi. What you give up for the lower price is a keypad, fingerprint reader and Apple Home Key: the "Lite" version is controlled by phone, Siri, automations and NFC tags only. Check the fitting requirements before ordering, especially how far your cylinder sticks out on the inside of the door.

Cheapest way into Nuki: Nuki Smart Lock Go

The Smart Lock Go puts Nuki's current technology into the classic, more compact white Nuki design. It has built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Matter over Thread, so it joins Apple Home the same way as the Smart Lock Pro, through a HomePod or Apple TV acting as Thread border router.

The savings come from two places. It runs on AA batteries (included) instead of a built-in rechargeable cell, though you can swap in Nuki's optional Power Pack. And full remote access in the Nuki app is a one-off extra purchase. Day-to-day control from the Home app and Siri works without it. If you mainly want your door in Apple Home and don't need the Pro's speed, the Go is a very sensible choice.

Best for keypad and face unlock: SwitchBot Lock Ultra

If you want to open the door without a phone or a key, SwitchBot's Lock Ultra bundle is the most feature-packed option here. The lock retrofits over a euro cylinder without replacing it, and this bundle adds the Keypad Vision on the outside of the door, which unlocks by 3D face recognition, fingerprint or code.

The catch for Apple users is the hub. The Lock Ultra itself talks Bluetooth, and it reaches Apple Home through Matter via a SwitchBot hub: the Hub 2, Hub 3 or Hub Mini (Matter Enabled), which acts as a bridge. Some Amazon bundles include a hub and some don't, so read the listing before you order. You also need a HomePod or Apple TV as home hub. In the Home app you get lock and unlock, which is what you need for Siri and automations. The face and fingerprint setup, guest codes and history all stay in the SwitchBot app.

Native HomeKit with a bridge: Yale Linus Smart Lock

Yale is one of Europe's best-known lock makers, and the Linus is its retrofit smart lock for euro cylinders. It supports HomeKit natively over Bluetooth, with no Matter and no Thread involved, so you scan the HomeKit code and it's in the Home app. With a HomePod or Apple TV close enough to the door, you can lock and unlock it from anywhere through Apple Home. It runs on four AA batteries and supports Yale's DoorSense sensor, so Siri can also tell you whether the door is actually closed.

This version comes with the Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. Be clear about what the bridge does: it gives you remote access, alerts and guest keys in the Yale app and connects the lock to Alexa and Google. It doesn't carry HomeKit traffic, which stays on Bluetooth. If your home hub is far from the front door, Bluetooth range can be the weak spot, so place a HomePod or Apple TV nearby if you can.

What to know before you buy

Does it fit your door?

All five locks are retrofit locks: they sit on the inside of the door and turn the cylinder that's already there. That works on most European front doors, but check three things before ordering:

  • The cylinder needs an emergency function (sometimes called a danger or override function), so your key still works from outside while the smart lock's key is in the cylinder on the inside. Without it, you'd lock yourself out. If your cylinder doesn't have one, a replacement euro cylinder with this function is usually a quick swap.
  • How far the cylinder sticks out on the inside. Each manufacturer gives a minimum, and some locks can be stuck on with an adhesive plate if the cylinder is flush.
  • Multipoint locks on uPVC and composite doors must turn smoothly. If you have to lift the handle and push hard to lock the door by hand, the motor will struggle too.

All manufacturers have a compatibility checker or fitting guide on their website. It's worth five minutes before you buy.

Thread, Bluetooth and bridges

  • Thread locks (Nuki Smart Lock Pro and Go, Aqara U200 Lite) need a Thread border router to join Apple Home. In Apple homes, that's a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation or later) or an Apple TV 4K with Thread. The Wi-Fi-only 64 GB Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) has no Thread radio.
  • Bluetooth HomeKit locks (Yale Linus) connect straight to Apple Home, but remote access and automations run through a home hub, which has to be within Bluetooth range of the door.
  • Bridged locks (SwitchBot) reach Apple Home through the manufacturer's Matter-enabled hub.

Apple Home needs a home hub for every Matter accessory, and for remote control and automations with any lock, so in practice a HomePod or Apple TV is part of every setup in this guide.

Matter vs native HomeKit

Native HomeKit locks talk to Apple Home directly. Matter locks work with Apple Home and Google, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and can be shared across several platforms at once. In the Home app both feel the same for locking and unlocking, but extra features such as unlatching, guest codes, access logs and auto-unlock usually stay in the manufacturer's app.

Apple Home Key

Home Key lets you unlock the door by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock, like a transit card. None of the five locks here supports it. Home Key locks are usually full lock sets with an outside handle or keypad rather than retrofit locks, and few of them are made for European doors. You can find the ones we list on our Locks category page.

Locks and automations

Apple Home asks you to confirm on your iPhone before it runs an automation that unlocks a door. That's a safety feature, not a bug. Locking automatically, for example when the last person leaves or at bedtime, runs without confirmation.

Side by side

Our verdict

For most European front doors with a HomePod or Apple TV already in the house, get the Nuki Smart Lock Pro: it's fast, rechargeable and joins Apple Home over Thread with no bridge. If you want to spend less, the Aqara U200 Lite is the best-value Thread lock, and the Nuki Smart Lock Go gives you Nuki's app and ecosystem on AA batteries. Choose the SwitchBot Lock Ultra bundle if face and fingerprint unlock matter most and you don't mind a SwitchBot hub, and the Yale Linus if you prefer native HomeKit from a classic lock brand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a hub for a HomeKit or Matter smart lock?

Yes, in practice. Thread locks such as the Nuki Smart Lock Pro, Nuki Smart Lock Go and Aqara U200 Lite need a Thread border router, which in Apple homes is a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation or later) or an Apple TV 4K with Thread. SwitchBot locks need a SwitchBot Hub 2, Hub 3 or Hub Mini (Matter Enabled) as a bridge. Bluetooth HomeKit locks such as the Yale Linus can be used near the door without a hub, but remote access and automations need a HomePod or Apple TV.

Do I have to replace my cylinder to fit a smart lock?

Usually not. All the locks in this guide are retrofit locks that mount on the inside of the door over your existing euro profile cylinder. The cylinder does need an emergency function, so a key still works from outside while another key is in the lock on the inside, and it must stick out far enough for the mounting plate. If yours doesn't meet the requirements, swapping in a suitable euro cylinder is a quick job.

Can I still use my normal key with a smart lock?

Yes. With a retrofit lock the outside of your door doesn't change, so your existing key keeps working from outside. That's your fallback if the battery runs flat or your phone is dead.

Which smart locks support Apple Home Key in Europe?

None of the retrofit locks in this guide support Home Key. Home Key locks are usually complete lock sets with a handle or keypad on the outside, and only a few are made for European doors. The Aqara Smart Lock U200 (the full version, not the Lite) is one example sold in some European stores.

Can Apple Home unlock my door automatically when I arrive?

Apple Home will run an automation that unlocks a door, but it asks you to confirm on your iPhone first, for security. Automatic locking, for example when everyone leaves, runs without confirmation. Some manufacturers, including Nuki, offer their own auto-unlock in their app.

What happens if the battery runs out?

Every lock here warns you in its app well before the battery is empty. If it does run flat, the door stays as it was and you open it with your normal key from outside. Rechargeable locks such as the Nuki Smart Lock Pro and Aqara U200 Lite charge over a cable; the Nuki Smart Lock Go and Yale Linus use AA batteries.
