Best HomeKit & Matter Smart Lights for Europe (2026)
Philips Hue, Nanoleaf, WiZ, LIFX, Eve or Govee? We compare the HomeKit and Matter light bulbs, light strips and lamps that work best with Apple Home in Europe, from E27 and GU10 bulbs to bright LED strips, and explain honestly which ones need a Hue Bridge, a Thread border router or just your Wi-Fi.
Smart lighting is where most Apple Home setups start, and where most of the frustration comes from. A bulb that says "works with HomeKit" on the box might need a bridge, a Thread border router, a manufacturer app or nothing at all, and E27, E14 and GU10 versions of the same product are often sold under near-identical names. This guide sorts out what each light actually needs and recommends the HomeKit and Matter lights we would put in our own homes: bulbs, spots, light strips and one portable lamp.
How we chose
We started from every light in our catalog that is sold in European Amazon stores and works with Apple Home, either natively through HomeKit or through Matter. Then we narrowed it down:
- Genuinely works with Apple Home. Native HomeKit or certified Matter. No "works with Siri Shortcuts" workarounds, no Homebridge.
- Honest about hubs. Some great lights need a bridge or a Thread border router. That is fine, as long as you know before you buy, so we say so for every pick.
- Good light, not just colours. Brightness, a wide range of whites for everyday use, and smooth dimming matter more than party modes.
- EU fit. E27 and GU10 versions for continental sockets and ceiling spots, at 230 V.
- Availability. Products you can buy in several EU countries, so the same advice works in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain.
Prices change too often to be useful in an article, so we leave those to the product boxes, which show a current price where one is available.
Our top pick: Philips Hue White & Colour Ambiance E27
If you want a lighting system rather than a few smart bulbs, Philips Hue is still the one to beat. The White & Colour Ambiance E27 bulb gives you around 1,100 lumens, warm to cool white from 2000 to 6500 K and full colour, with very smooth dimming at the low end, which is where cheap bulbs tend to flicker or jump.
The important caveat: for Apple Home you need a Hue Bridge (or the newer Hue Bridge Pro for very large systems). The bulb also has Bluetooth, but that only lets the Hue app control up to ten lights from your phone; it does not put the bulb in the Home app. With the Bridge, every Hue light appears in Apple Home, works with Siri, scenes and Adaptive Lighting, and talks over Zigbee, so it doesn't load your Wi-Fi. The Bridge also supports Matter, so you can share the same lights with Google Home or Alexa later.
The Bridge is an extra purchase, but it pays off quickly: Hue has the widest range of fittings and fixtures of any brand, from E14 candles to outdoor lights, and they all join the same system. If you only ever want one or two smart bulbs, one of the bridge-free picks below is the cheaper route.
Best Thread bulb without a bridge: Nanoleaf Essentials Matter GU10
Nanoleaf's Essentials Matter bulbs connect over Thread, so they need no Nanoleaf hub and no Wi-Fi password. They respond almost instantly, keep working when the internet is down, and every bulb acts as a Thread router that strengthens the mesh for your sensors. The GU10 version is a 230 V spot with up to 400 lumens, 2700 to 6500 K whites and full colour.
What you do need is a Thread border router and home hub: a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation or later) or an Apple TV 4K with Thread. Without one, Bluetooth gives you basic control in the Nanoleaf app only. Note that 400 lumens is typical for a GU10, but a single spot will not light a room on its own. Nanoleaf also sells Essentials bulbs in E27 and B22, so check that you have the GU10 listing before ordering.
Best budget Wi-Fi Matter bulb: WiZ Colour E27
WiZ is Signify's (the Philips Hue company) Wi-Fi brand, and its Matter bulbs are the most affordable way to get a reliable colour bulb into Apple Home without any bridge or Thread hardware. This E27 bulb gives about 806 lumens, the equivalent of a 60 W bulb, with tunable white and colour.
Setup takes one extra step: WiZ's own instructions have you add the bulb in the WiZ app first, then generate a Matter pairing code there and scan it in the Home app. As with every Matter device, Apple Home needs a home hub. After that it behaves like any other light in the Home app. It's a good choice for lamps and rooms where you want smart control without building a whole system, and since it's Wi-Fi, keep an eye on how many devices your router handles if you plan to buy a dozen.
Native HomeKit, no hub needed: LIFX Colour A60 E27
LIFX bulbs connect straight to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and support HomeKit natively: scan the HomeKit code and the bulb is in the Home app, with no bridge, Matter or LIFX account required. This E27 model is rated at 1,000 lumens and is known for particularly rich, saturated colours, so it suits living rooms where you actually use colour scenes.
Because it's native HomeKit, you can control it from the Home app on your home network even without a home hub. For remote access and automations, you still need a HomePod or Apple TV. One honest limitation: this model is not on LIFX's list of Matter-compatible products, so it stays an Apple-and-LIFX-app bulb unless you add other bridges.
Best GU10 spots for a Hue system: Philips Hue White & Colour Ambiance GU10
Kitchens, hallways and bathrooms in Europe are full of GU10 downlights, and replacing them with smart spots is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. If you already have, or plan to get, a Hue Bridge, this 5-pack of White & Colour Ambiance GU10 spots (400 lumens each) is the easy answer: they join the same Hue system as the bulb above, appear in Apple Home through the Bridge, and the Zigbee mesh gets stronger with every spot you add.
Make sure your fittings really are 230 V GU10 (two short pins with small "feet"). Low-voltage GU5.3/MR16 spots look similar but need a different bulb and often a transformer.
Best light strip for Apple Home: Nanoleaf Essentials Matter Lightstrip
For bright, even backlighting behind a TV, under kitchen cabinets or along a bed frame, the Nanoleaf Essentials Matter Lightstrip is our pick. The 5 m starter kit uses RGBCW LEDs with dedicated warm and cool white diodes, so it's genuinely usable as white light, not just colour, and Nanoleaf rates it at up to 2,200 lumens. It can be cut every 33 cm and extended to 10 m, and the in-line controller lets you switch it on and off, dim it or change colour without your phone.
Like the Nanoleaf bulbs, it runs Matter over Thread, so it needs a Thread border router and home hub such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K. The whole strip shows one colour at a time; for multi-colour gradients, look at the Govee strip below.
Brightest native HomeKit strip: Eve Light Strip
Eve's Light Strip is built for Apple users first. It connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, appears directly in the Home app with no bridge, and Eve has no cloud and no account requirement. With 1,800 lumens across its 2 m length, it's very bright for its size, and each segment combines colour, warm white and cool white LEDs, so white light looks natural. It supports Adaptive Lighting when you have a home hub.
The strip can be cut in 30 cm steps or extended to 10 m with 2 m extensions sold separately. The trade-off: it's HomeKit only. It doesn't support Thread or Matter, so it won't move to Google or Alexa later. If you're staying in Apple Home, that's not a problem. For automations and remote control, you need a HomePod or Apple TV.
Best for colour effects: Govee LED Strip Light 2 Pro
If you want multi-colour gradients, flowing effects and music sync, Govee's Strip Light 2 Pro is the strip to get. It's an RGBIC strip with added white LEDs, so different segments can show different colours at once, and Govee rates it at around 1,700 lumens over 5 m. It works with Apple Home through Matter over Wi-Fi.
Be aware of what Matter does and doesn't carry over. In Apple Home you get on/off, brightness, colour and white temperature, which is enough for scenes and automations. The segment effects, DIY patterns and music sync stay in the Govee app. As with any Matter device, Apple Home needs a home hub.
Best portable lamp: Eve Flare
Eve Flare is a cordless 25 cm globe lamp with a built-in battery rated for more than six hours, a wireless charging base and IP65 water resistance, so you can carry it from the living room to the balcony or garden. It supports Thread and Bluetooth, adds to Apple Home without a bridge, and works with Siri, scenes and automations like any other light.
Keep expectations right: with 90 lumens it's a mood light, not a reading lamp. And it's battery-powered, so unlike mains-powered Thread devices, it doesn't act as a Thread router. Eve has promised a free Matter update but has not given a date yet, so for now it works with Apple Home only.
What to know before you buy
Matter vs native HomeKit
Native HomeKit lights (LIFX, Eve Light Strip, Eve Flare, and Hue through its Bridge) talk to Apple Home directly. Matter lights (Nanoleaf Essentials Matter, WiZ, Govee) work with Apple Home and Google, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and can be shared across several platforms at once. Day to day, both feel the same in the Home app, although Matter lights sometimes expose fewer features there than in their own app. Apple Home requires a home hub to add Matter accessories.
Hue Bridge, Thread border routers and home hubs
Three kinds of hardware come up in this guide:
- The Hue Bridge is only needed for Philips Hue. It connects Hue lights to Apple Home over Zigbee. Hue's Bluetooth mode is for the Hue app only.
- A Thread border router is needed for Thread lights (Nanoleaf Essentials Matter, Eve Flare). In Apple homes, that's a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation or later), or an Apple TV 4K with Thread. The Wi-Fi-only 64 GB Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) has no Thread radio.
- A home hub (the same HomePod or Apple TV) is needed for all Matter lights, for automations and for remote access.
If you already own a Thread-capable HomePod or Apple TV, Thread lights are usually the fastest and most reliable choice.
Fittings: E27, E14, GU10 and B22
E27 is the standard large screw base across continental Europe, E14 the small screw base used in candle bulbs and many small lamps, and GU10 the two-pin base for 230 V ceiling spots. The UK and parts of France also use B22 bayonet bulbs. Most brands sell the same bulb in several fittings, often under nearly identical names, so always check the fitting on the product box before ordering. You can filter by fitting on our Lights category page.
Wall switches and dimmers
Smart bulbs need constant power. If someone turns off the wall switch, the bulb drops out of Apple Home until it's switched back on. Leave the switch on and use a smart button or the Home app instead, or use a smart switch designed for smart bulbs. Never put smart bulbs on a traditional dimmer circuit.

Our verdict
If you're building smart lighting for a whole home, get a Hue Bridge and Philips Hue bulbs and spots: nothing else matches the range and polish. If you have a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K and want to skip the bridge, choose Nanoleaf Essentials Matter bulbs and the Nanoleaf Matter Lightstrip over Thread. Pick WiZ for affordable Matter bulbs over Wi-Fi, LIFX for native HomeKit colour with no hub at all, the Eve Light Strip for the brightest Apple-only strip, Govee if colour effects matter most, and Eve Flare for portable mood light indoors and out.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a hub for HomeKit or Matter light bulbs?
It depends on the light. Philips Hue needs the Hue Bridge to appear in Apple Home. Thread lights such as Nanoleaf Essentials Matter need a Thread border router, which in Apple homes is a HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation or later) or Apple TV 4K with Thread. All Matter lights need an Apple home hub to be added. Native HomeKit Wi-Fi lights such as LIFX or the Eve Light Strip can be controlled on your home network without a hub, but remote control and automations still need one.
Can I use Philips Hue with Apple Home without a Hue Bridge?
Not with Bluetooth. Hue's Bluetooth mode only works with the Hue app, for up to ten lights. To get Hue lights into the Home app, with Siri, scenes and automations, you need a Hue Bridge or Hue Bridge Pro. Hue says some newer bulbs with a Matter logo can also join Apple Home directly over Thread; check the packaging if you want to go that way.
Are Thread light bulbs better than Wi-Fi bulbs?
Usually, if you already have a Thread border router. Thread bulbs respond quickly, don't use up Wi-Fi capacity or need a Wi-Fi password, and each mains-powered bulb strengthens the mesh for battery sensors. Wi-Fi bulbs are fine too and are the simpler choice if you don't have a Thread-capable HomePod or Apple TV, but a large number of them can strain a basic router.
Which bulb fitting do I need in Europe?
Most ceiling and table lamps in continental Europe use E27 (large screw) or E14 (small screw), and ceiling spots usually use GU10, a 230 V two-pin base. The UK and parts of France also use B22 bayonet bulbs. Low-voltage GU5.3/MR16 spots look like GU10 but need different bulbs. Check the fitting on the product listing, since the same bulb is often sold in several versions.
Can I use a smart bulb with a normal wall switch?
Yes, but leave the switch on. A smart bulb needs constant power, and if the wall switch is turned off the bulb disappears from Apple Home until power returns. Use a smart button, Siri or the Home app instead, or a smart switch designed for smart bulbs. Never use smart bulbs on a traditional dimmer circuit.
